Quick answer

What is a parent governor election?

A parent governor election is the legal process by which parents and carers of registered pupils elect representatives to their school's governing body. In England, maintained schools must have at least two parent governors, elected where possible, and the election must be by secret ballot. Choice Voting handles the full process online, producing a signed audit report every school can share with inspectors, trustees or the local authority.

When Ofsted come, you'll already have the evidence.

Ofsted does not prescribe how you engage parents. It requires that you can demonstrate you do, and that the evidence is visible, consistent, defensible and triangulated. Parent governor elections sit under Leadership and Management, one of the four inspection priorities, and a healthy governing body is what inspectors probe when they ask about strategic oversight, challenge and accountability.

What evidence does Ofsted expect for parent voice?

Four steps. Five minutes.

From "we need to run an election" to "the audit pack is on the clerk's desk". Here's how.

Open nominations

Load your parent list from Wonde or your MIS. Set the window, write the candidate statement prompt, and open nominations. Candidates self-submit, you approve.

Ballot goes live

Branded with your school's logo. Secret ballot by STV or first past the post. Parents vote on any device, in any language they need.

Results are counted

Live count when the window closes. Tie-break rules applied automatically. Full count log available.

Audit report generated

A signed PDF with every nomination, every anonymised ballot, the count, the tie-break, the timestamps and the returning officer sign-off.

Everything you need. Nothing you don't.

Secret ballot that actually is secret

Ballots are anonymised at submission. The voter's identity is never linked to the vote, even in the audit log.

Returning officer audit log

Every action, every user, every timestamp. Exported as a signed PDF pack.

Automated nominations

Candidates self-register, submit statements, withdraw if they need to. No chasing from the clerk.

Statement moderation

Review every statement before it goes live. Record why if one is rejected.

Branded voter portal

Your school or trust's logo and voice. Not ours.

Live count and tie-break handling

Instant results when the window closes. Tie-breaks handled to your chosen rule.

MIS integrations

Wonde, Scholarpack, Integris and Arbor. Parent data flows in, nothing to type.

Multi-lingual ballots

Parents vote in the language they read at home.

Term of office tracker

Know when the next election is due, six months ahead.

Parent governors are only half the picture.

Parent governor elections: the questions schools ask us most.

How long does a parent governor serve?

The standard term is four years, set by the Instrument of Government in maintained schools, and by the funding agreement and trust articles for academies. A parent governor whose child leaves the school may continue to serve out their term, subject to the governing body's rules.

What happens if nobody stands for election?

If the number of candidates is equal to or fewer than the number of vacancies, no ballot is required and the candidates are deemed elected. If no one stands at all, the governing body may appoint a parent to fill the vacancy, subject to local rules.

Is an online secret ballot legally compliant?

Yes. The School Governance (Constitution) Regulations 2012 require a secret ballot but do not prescribe the medium. An online ballot is compliant provided it preserves anonymity, produces an auditable record, and is open to every parent in the register of eligible voters. Choice Voting meets all three.

What evidence will Ofsted want to see?

Inspectors probe how your governing body is constituted and whether parental representation is genuine. A signed returning officer report, your nominations log, the anonymised result, and your Terms of Office record all count as triangulated evidence under Leadership and Management.

Who acts as returning officer?

The governing body appoints a returning officer, often the clerk or an independent third party. The returning officer runs the process and signs the audit pack at the end. Choice Voting supports either model and logs every action against the named officer.

How quickly can we set up?

Under five minutes for a school that has its parent list in Wonde or a supported MIS. Longer if you are uploading from scratch, though still the same day. We walk you through the first one.
